Become a Shared Lives Carer

Who can become a Shared Lives carer

All types of people can become a Shared Lives carer. What is important is that you can offer your time and be aware of an individual's needs. For carers that offer short or long term care, you will need to have a spare room available for the customer to sleep in. You do not need any qualifications or previous experience; as all approved carers will be provided with a variety of training courses to help ensure that you have all the relevant skills and knowledge to be able to care for individuals.

Why should I become a Shared Lives carer?

There are several benefits of becoming an approved Shared Lives carer. Approved carers will

  • Have access to a range of useful training courses
  • Receive a cash payment for the time that you provide support to any individuals whether this is a long/ short term placement or a day service.
  • Get a lot of personal satisfaction from building a relationship with people who use the scheme and including them as part of the family.
  • Have the flexibility to decide when they are able and unable to provide support to individuals (excluding long term placements)

What support will I receive when I am approved?

  • Training - full training will be provided to you when you are approved to ensure that you feel comfortable providing the relevant support to individuals.
  • Financial - you will receive a cash payment for the time that you provide support to any individuals whether this is a long/ short term placement or a day service.
  • Shared Lives Team - The team will provide you with ongoing advice and support where necessary so if you have any queries or concerns at any point you can contact a member of the team direct.
