World War One - Commemorative Events

Celebrating 100 years since World War One! Events, projects and commemorative ceremonies will be taking place in Bury during 2018, marking the 100th anniversary of the First World War. This page is intended to offer information and links to events, websites and projects which are making special arrangements to mark the centenary.

These events will be taking place late September and will end on or before Remembrance Sunday in November.

Bury Parish Church WW1 group have recently ran a schools art competition, the winners that have been selected are set to have their artwork displayed in the Fusiliers Museum and The Town Hall from September onwards.

Bury Council have order 100 lamp post poppies at the cost of £3 each. A number of them will be secured to lamp posts around the Town Hall and down towards the Fusiliers Museum. Photographs will be taken to show the impact of the poppies which will then be directed at businesses, community groups, individuals and Councillors in order that they can also buy a poppy to go up on a lamp post or positioned in a location of their choice within Bury. A just giving page will be set up so that contributions go straight to the Royal British Legion.

Rammy Rocks – Remembrance Rocks

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

To commemorate the end of The First World War, Rammy Rocks will be burying a time capsule in Nuttall Park full of painted rocks that depict WW1, details of the local lads who went to war as well as all of the people who have participated in creating this lasting memorial, a real way to bring past, present and future to one place. If you would like your child’s or your own memory rock placed in the permanent memorial structure please come down to the parks tea room on Saturday 20th October between 11:30-15:30. This will be the last chance to take part in a workshop and look where the memorial will be sited before the unveiling.

The unveiling of the Rammy Rocks’ remembrance rocks memorial will take place on the 4th November. We will unveil the memorial which will be the time capsule that has been prepared throughout October.

Vintage afternoon tea party to commemorate the end of World War 1. On the day there will entertainment from the veteran’s sweetheart Sarah Dennis and tea coffee and biscuits.
