From the hundreds of thousands silent 999 calls made each year, the Silent Solution helps to filter out accidental calls from those seeking urgent help who may be too frightened or unable to speak.
The Silent Solution works in the following way:
- In an emergency situation, when someone calls 999 they will be asked which service they require.
- If there is no answer the operator will then ask the call to tap the handset, cough or make a noise.
- If, at this point, there has been no noise made the caller is then given the option to press 55 on the telephone keypad. At this point if there has still been no response, the call will be terminated.
The Silent Solution has been used for over 15 years as emergency services are unfortunately unable to respond to every silent 999 call made.
