Overdoses can happen to anyone, and they can happen quickly. You don’t need to be a professional. You just need to stay calm, act fast, and follow a few simple steps.

Whether it’s alcohol, prescription medication, or other drugs, knowing what to look for and how to respond can save a life.

Call 999, check their breathing, and stay with them. If you have Naloxone and suspect an opioid overdose, use it right away.

Common signs include:

Unconsciousness or unresponsiveness
Slow, shallow, or stopped breathing
Blue or pale lips, fingertips, or skin
Snoring, gurgling, or choking sounds
Vomiting or foaming at the mouth
Seizures or rigid body
Unusual behaviour or confusion

If in doubt, treat it as an emergency.

What to Do Immediately

Call 999 – Ask for an ambulance and explain what you suspect.
Check for breathing – If not breathing, start CPR if trained.
Put the person in the recovery position – On their side, with their head tilted back.
Stay with them – Monitor breathing and responsiveness.
Give Naloxone if available – If you suspect an opioid overdose, use naloxone (see below).
Do not leave them alone – Stay until emergency services arrive.
